MCA has accused its rival DAP of not exercising influence over Selangor and its Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) to put a quick end to the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) controversy.

MCA publicity chief Chai Kim Sen said in a statement today that DAP leaders Lim Kit Siang and his son, Lim Guan Eng, had acted irresponsibly in merely wanting to score political points.

 

He claimed that using common sense, DAP could have reprimanded fellow Pakatan MP and Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim - who has control over Jais - for seizing 321 copies of the Malay-language bible last Thursday.

"Does DAP not feel disappointed in the way Jais conducted themselves? Kit Siang even asked that BN and Pakatan sit down to discuss national reconciliation, yet he cannot bring himself to criticise the inaction by the Selangor government, thus proving DAP is powerless in Selangor," Chai ( left ) said.

MCA, however, admitted that the actions of Jais were wrong.

"It is wrong for DAP to turn a blind eye to the wrongdoings of Jais under Selangor Pakatan. Such extremism cannot be tolerated and should be dealt with immediately," Chai added.

In contrast, constitutional law professor Abdul Aziz Bari had last week said that those urging the Selangor MB to intervene in Jais' actions were barking up the wrong tree.

This was because Jais answers to the Selangor sultan and not to the state government.

Selangor's exco member in charge of Islamic affairs Sallehan Mukhyi  had told Malaysiakini that the state government was therefore not consulted about the raid.

However, after public uproar, MB Khalid said two days ago that Jais' standard operating procedure (SOP) had been revised to ensure that it discusses future raids with the Selangor state exco, if matters could turn sensitive.
