Terengganu has been hit by floods again with 155 people from 45 families forced to evacuate their homes in Kemaman since early yesterday.

    

According to the National Security Council (MKN) portal, as of 9am today three flood relief centres (FRCs) had been opened in the district.

    

The three FRCs are the Padang Kubu JKKK Hall which is sheltering 87 people (26 families), Padang Kubu Kilang Barracks (33 people from eight families), and Rumah Pegawai Sungai Mas (35 people from eight families).

    

They were moved to the three FRCs around 8am yesterday after their low-lying homes were hit by floods following heavy rain overnight.

    

However, it is expected that they would be allowed to return home early as the flood waters were reported to be subsiding.  

    

Terengganu was hit by massive floods last month with Kemaman as the worst-hit district.

    

Meanwhile, the weather in state capital Kuala Terengganu this morning has been noted to be rainy with strong winds.

    

It was also reported that fishermen in the state, especially those operating small boats, have been avoiding going out to sea since yesterday because of rough waves and gale-force winds.

Overflowing rivers

In Kuantan, flood victims from six villages in the Kuala Lipis area have been moved to relief centres when water from three nearby rivers flooded their homes last evening.

    

Heavy rain which fell non-stop for two days caused the Jelai, Tanum and Kechau rivers to overflow, causing 138 members of 27 families to seek refuge at the centres.

    

According to a spokesperson of the Pahang Police Contingent Headquarters flood operations room, the victims were sent to the centres from 6.30pm yesterday.

    

"As of 5pm today, 38 people from five families from Kampung Demik Bukit Betong have been moved to the Sek Keb Batu Yon, nine from two families in Kampung Beralas sent to the Beralas Community Hall, and 36 from six families in Kampung Chegar Perah to Sek Keb Chegar Perah.

    

"Meanwhile, 22 victims from five families in Kampung Kuala Telang were moved to the Bukit Semak Mosque, 26 from five families in Kampung Seberang Jelai to the Kampung Seberang Jelai Mosque, and seven from four families in Kampung Dusun to their relatives' homes," he told Bernama today.

    

He added that water had flooded the main road in Kampung Kolek, Sungai Lembing, allowing only heavy vehicles to pass through.    

He also said the public should be cautious and follow police instructions when asked to move to relief centres.
