The Giat Mara building in Selayang is not in a satisfactory state, according to Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

As such, the state government intends to take over the building if Giat Mara Sdn Bhd does not comply with notice given to upgrade the structure.

He refused to be drawn into responding to an allegation by Selangor Umno that the state government is discriminating against Malays by closing down the centre, which gives vocational training to Bumiputra youths.

Abdul Khalid said the state government intends to upgrade the place and set up an aviation repair centre to train youths, unless there is compliance with its notice.

“We’ve given Giat Mara a year’s notice from Dec 4 last year to upgrade the building and facilities, to prove their capacity to the state government.

“If they can’t we will take over (the building) because there is a company that is interested is providing aviation parts training,” he told a press conference after chairing the exco meeting today.

He also said the land occupied by the building belongs to the state.

Yesterday, Umno supreme council member Sohaimi Shahadan ( right ) had - through a statement - accused the state of discriminating against Malays by closing down the centre.

However, Abdul Khalid said that the special taskforce on state lands is producing reports on the state of every land owned by the Selangor government.

This, he said, was in order to update the land accounts in every district in the state.

The team found that the land occupied by Giat Mara was supposed to house a multi-purpose hall and not a vocational training centre.

"In three or four years, an accounting system will merge the accounts and land reports of every state. So when this happens, the officer of the Gombak land office has issued a notice accordingly," he said.
