Pointing to environmental issues in Terengganu, Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) Youth wing is questioning the role of the state’s Menteri Besar Ahmad Said in leading a Malaysian delegation to Antarctica.

PSM Youth chief Edwin Michael said that Terengganu faces a range of environmental issues, such as coastal erosion from Besut to Kemaman, swamp clearing, and illegal logging.

In addition, he points that the Malaysian’s are facing rising cost of living and growing national debt, whereas the benefits of his visit seemed “doubtful”.

“These environmental crimes are legitimised by the Terengganu state government, which in turn directly or indirectly contributes to climate change.

“PSM Youth does not oppose this research mission, but it should have a clear justification and not be used by politicians to go on holiday at taxpayer’s expense,” he said in his statement yesterday.

Michael also question why a menteri besar is sent to lead the delegation, instead of the science, technology and environment minister.

According to Bernama yesterday, Ahmad will lead the delegation on a 15-day visit to Antarctica beginning tomorrow to pave the way for setting up a research station.

It is meant for conducting joint research with the Chilean Antarctic Institute (Instituto Antártico Chileno or INACH) on climate change.
