In view of the silence of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) over the case, MCA Youth is volunteering the services of its own lawyers to prosecute the suspect behind the alleged assault on Deputy Education Minister II P Kamalanathan.

MCA Youth legal bureau chief Choo Wei Sern says it has been almost a week since the police have submitted its investigation papers to the AGC, but thus far it has not made any decision over it.

“Given the failure to act by the AGC, should the AGC still refuse to act for any reason whatsoever, the MCA Youth legal bureau is willing to offer our assistance to the AGC to prosecute the suspect in this incident.

“It is thus our hope that the attorney-general will exercise his powers under the Criminal Procedure Code to appoint our group of lawyers from MCA to act as prosecutors on a pro bono basis to ensure that justice is upheld without fear or favour,” he said in a statement today.

Choo, who is also an MCA central committee member, was referring to Kamalanathan’s police report claiming that Hulu Selangor Umno Youth assistant secretary Muhammad Rizuan Suhaimi had punched him in the former’s office on Jan 12.

He warned that delays would reduce public confidence in the AGC, as it would seem to be delaying or refusing to take action because of the suspect’s political affiliation.

“In this respect, the AGC ought to be reminded that justice does not distinguish any person based on their political affiliation or background and that the AGC must act swiftly in deciding whether or not to prosecute the suspect.

 

“In addition to that, the AGC must also be serious in fighting against violence through the criminal justice system where no violence should be tolerated,” he stressed.
