Undeterred by the various threats hurled at him by pro-government groups, Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon said he will be attending another protest against price hikes this Sunday.

It's the 'Turun' rally at Bandar Sunway, Seberang Jaya.

 

Lee, who was condemned for organising a ‘I Love Kangkung’ flash mob against price hikes in Alma in Penang on Jan 17, said many had asked if he would be there.

 

"I will be there to join the group in expressing their voices against the price hikes and the Goods and Services Tax. We do not agree to these government policies which burden the people," he said at a press conference today in Alma.

 

Asked if he feared for his safety if he attended the rally, Lee replied "Why should I be afraid?

 

"I am joining a protest organised by a coalition of NGOs. It is a protest by the people," added the state PKR Youth information chief.

 

Asked if he would be repeating his kangkung theme style flash mob, where bundles of the vegetable was fed into the open mouth of a likeness of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak. Lee said "No. I have made my message clear at the flash mob.”

The Turun rally will be held from 2-4pm, and among the leaders attending is the popular PKR Pandan MP, Rafizi Ramli ( right ).

 

Lee, denied insulting Najib over his speech in Kemaman, Terengganu on Jan 12, where the premier had used kangkung as an example to explain the rise and fall of prices due to market forces.

 

Questioned by police

Today, Lee was questioned for 40 minutes at his service centre under Section 500 of the Penal Code, for criminal defamation by Seberang Perai Tengah senior investigation officer Hasan Mohd Salleh.

 

"The session was pleasant and went well," Lee told reporters.

 

Although he was questioned as a witness, Lee said police asked him about the flash mob, saying he was involved in defamation, but did not mention the victim's name.

 

"I hope the police will not practise double standards and will question and act against those who were violent during their demonstration on Sunday," he added.

 

In last Sunday's rally, about 300 pro-Najib supporters rallied at Lee's service centre. They hurled obscenities and burnt an effigy of a half mannequin with his photo in place of the head.

Two unknown men were attacked by several members of the group who claimed they had uttered racist statements.

According to Lee, out of the 10 police reports lodged, eight are from Jitra, Kedah, one from Raub, Pahang and another from Bukit Teh, Bukit Mertajam.
