PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli has urged youths who want to marry to do so before April 2015 when the Goods and Services Tax (GST) comes into effect.

Rafizi was quoted by the Selangor state portal, Selangorku , as saying wedding costs will rise as wedding banquet and food expenses will rise as a result of the GST.

He was quoted as advising this during the Understand GST, Reject GST briefing session at the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre on Thursday night.

Rafizi, who is also Member of Parliament for Pandan, said this would include the cost of catering, rental of a hall, tents and the services of a photographer.

The former accountant predicted that catering companies would not be able to avoid GST as they have to register their firms for tax purposes.

This move, he said, was to enable the company to claim GST credit from the government.

“If the catering firm fails to register the company to impose the GST to clients, it will have to bear the charges imposed by suppliers and would not be able to claim GST credit from the government.

“So the catering firm also has to register,” he said.
