Gerakan will be amending its constitution this year to limit the tenure of the party president, said its president Mah Siew Kiong.

He said a study led by the party's Disciplinary and Party Constitution Bureau chairperson Dr Chin Fook Weng was being undertaken to look into the matter.

"The study which will take two months to complete will also include the possibility of limiting terms for members of parliament and state assemblymen," he said.

He said party was considering whether they should serve a maximum of two or three terms.

"The proposal will be presented to our delegates this year and either the amendments will be made through the national delegates conference or an extraordinary general meeting, we will decide later," he told a news conference after chairing Gerakan's Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting at Menara PGRM today.

Limiting the president's terms in office was one of Mah's pledges in the party election last year in order to keep abreast of the changing socio-political landscape in the country.

On another matter, Mah said all levels of the party machinery had been directed to start working and making strategies towards facing the 14th general election (GE14).

He added each central committee member was assigned to adopt a constituency and to make sure the work was conducted systematically and effectively and the state chairperson were also directed to identify potential grassroot leaders and candidates in preparation for GE14.

"It's not too early. We want to concentrate to groom new leaders and hope to be ready for GE14," he said, adding that 70 percent of Gerakan's candidates in GE14 would be under 50 years old.
