Malay unity not possible, says Ungku Aziz

Pemerhati: Malay academician Ungku Abdul Aziz Ungku Abdul Hamid says that the people should not challenge the Umno government. Like many other Malaysians he must know that Umno steals by the billions.

 

For example, there is ample published evidence in the public domain that former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Sarawak CM Abdul Taib Mahmud’s children are billionaires and Najib’s stepson has been investing in real estate and the film industry in US amounting to hundreds of millions), and those linked to Umno are alleged to be involved in crimes such as rape (e.g. a former chief minister and a minister) and the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.

 

The present government is also an illegitimate government as it ‘won’ the elections through massive fraud with the help of the lackey elections commission, massive and unfair gerrymandering and got only 47 percent of the popular vote (the opposition got 51 percent) despite having complete control of the media and bribing the electorate with billions.

 

This shows to what lengths a father like Aziz will go to protect his own and his daughter's interests in Malaysia, which is essentially a corrupt dictatorship.

 

Worried Sick: What has happened to this learned professor? Has he gone senile? What does he mean when he says if there is patriotism, then the government would not be challenged? Does he not know the meaning of patriotism? I am shocked because this was a man I admired so much.

 

IQ900: Aziz is very wrong, pity he is a not‑so‑good‑thinking professor. When the government is run by some stupid Umno politicians, we cannot obey them, otherwise we become stupid ourselves. A government is elected by the people; they should listen to and obey the people. Not the other way round.

 

Fairplayer: Dear Ungku Aziz, there is a lack of patriotism because we have a rogue government in place! The current Umno‑led BN government stole the last GE13 results and put itself as the "elected" government, when any well‑informed Malaysian knows they got to Putrajaya by all kinds of fraudulent means.

 

We can't respect the BN government. How to feel "patriotic" when crooks rule the country? Anyway, true patriotism means wanting the best for the country, and that means righting all wrongs. That is a true patriot.

 

Not Confused: Patriotism is born of respect for the government, not fear and disgust at how it manages the country. Respect is earned, not demanded. The government will and always should be challenged ‑ that is a basic tenet of democracy.

 

The problem is that BN has not seriously been challenged until the past couple of general elections. It has been used to having its way without any challenge. That is why the country is now deteriorating and will shortly implode if something is not done soon.

Bamboo: The New Economic Policy (NEP) has bred a few generations of Malays who only want freebies presented on a silver platter. Patriotism is loyalty to Malaysia, not loyalty to the government.

 

Malaysiancare: If the government is really fair, helping and bringing up the standard of living for all its people, there is no need to mention the word patriotism.

 

Oh Ya? It is regrettable that such a renounced academician is still so feudal in thinking. Patriotism doesn't equate not challenging the government, especially a bad government. Patriotism is the love for the country and challenging a bad government is true patriotism.

 

Mechi: Umno ruling the nation is a case of totally incompetent people only filling their coffers and their cronies' pockets. They are a disgrace to every religion, race and creed. God, please punish them like former Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos. (Will Dr M have a nightmare when he sees the light of himself in Marcos?). You seem to define patriotism as not challenging the government. We oppose the government because we love the nation and do not want a few corrupt politicians to bring it to ruin.

 

What do you mean by Malay unity, do you mean PAS should condone Umno's corruption and opportunism and incompetence and be buddy buddy with Umno pals to become partners in corruption, is that Malay unity?

 

Samurai: Malay unity is a euphemism for apartheid. What are the Malays being called to unite against? He speaks as if there are no other people in Malaysia that matter in the scheme of nationhood.

What he is really saying is, he is sad that Malays are no longer hot on Umno type ketuanan and happily working alongside other Malaysians. Which was what that stupid 1Malaysia was supposed to engender.

 

Anonymous_3e79: Patriotism means cherishing the values of Malaysia as Malaysians. It also mean the will to replace a misaligned and corrupt government.

Abasir: The highly valued education system much of which you, Ungku Aziz, sold to that other fake Malay to ensure your own survival is the reason Malays don't strive to be the best and are seen to be chasing handouts and titles.

 

And if you believe that patriotism means not challenging the government however evil, corrupt and incompetent it is, you should look for a rope to do what men of honour would do when shamed.

 

Fair Play: Dear professor, you are a learned man. I hope you are not trying to confuse the ordinary rakyat. Why compare patriotism to the nation with patriotism to the government of the day? The government of the day is transient. The nation is permanent.
