Some 1,000 former national service (NS) trainees will assist the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in its operations during the Chinese New Year (CNY) festive season.

National Service Training Department director-general Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said between 20 and 30 NS ex-trainees would be stationed at each location manned by the JPJ.

He said the former NS trainees would help educate road users to obey the highway code.

“The former trainees are offering their services on a voluntary basis and their involvement is a good training in community service, apart from teaching them to obey traffic rules,” he told reporters after seeing off Chinese NS trainees leaving for home for the CNY at the Etonobotani Camp in Gua Musang.

Urging the former trainees to portray a good example to the community, he hoped their involvement in the JPJ operations would help reduce accident rate during the CNY.

He said so far, 32,000 trainees were undergoing a stint at 79 camps nationwide while two camps had to be closed for not adhering to rules and conditions.
