Bau folk irked by stench of uncollected garbage

The stench of garbage that has not been collected for weeks is getting on the nerves of residents in the Bau district.
A survey by Bernama last Thursday found trash scattered along the road which overflowed from bins which were full to the brim, while tourist attractions such as Gua Fairy and Gua Angin also shared the same fate.
Kampung Batu Sepit Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) secretary Joryim Ngayop said that garbage which residents gathered in large bins at each village were neglected by garbage collecters appointed by the Bau District Council (MDB) for up to two weeks.
“The MDB should ensure that the appointed contractor picks up the trash twice a week, not once in every two weeks as what is happening now,” he said when met last Thursday.
He said the number of bins provided by the district council for each village was not only insufficient to cater to the increasing quantity of trash, but were also damaged.
According to Joryim, the problem had prolonged for more than two months and urged the MDB to take action.
MDB secretary Jitien Ritop, when contacted, admitted the delay in garbage collection in all areas under the council’s jurisdiction.
He said they were aware of the problem and assured that they were working to resolve the matter.
“We hope to have the situation rectified by mid-February,” he said.
Jitien added that the problem arose after a truck belonging to the contractor was faulty, leaving only two trucks which are able to operate.
He added that the council would also buy additional garbage bins, but this is pending approval from a meeting with council members some time early this month.
