Malay rights group Perkasa yesterday questioned the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for not taking quick action against Facebook accounts that insult Islam, despite its quick action in removing an anti-Christian Facebook page.

“Perkasa wishes to question, why act so fast in taking action against a Facebook account that insulted Christians while no action was taken against many pages that insulted Islam despite numerous reports?” Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali ( right ) asked in a statement yesterday.

“Are the police reports not enough or should people complain to MCMC as well?” Syed Hassan asked.

“Perkasa hopes MCMC is not selective with complaints. The insults against the purity of Islam is not little in web portals and Facebook accounts,” he said.

He said that Perkasa was “surprised” that such swift action was taken by MCMC when the issue concerned Christianity.

“Are freedom of expression groups also selective in making criticism? When MCMC shuts down an anti-Christian page, they are quiet. But when action is taken against an anti-Islam page, they criticise,” he said.

Syed Hassan did not say which freedom of expression groups has criticised MCMC’s action against anti-Islam websites.
