The Health Ministry has proposed for the temporary closure of the Batu Ferringhi Beach area affected by sea water pollution to prevent e-coli (Escherichia coli) infection. 

"Although there have been no reports of e-coli infections so far, we view the matter very seriously as it can cause severe diarhoea," Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahaya said after opening a programme at the Kampung Rawa Mosque in George Town today.      

"So the ministry hopes the state government can close the area temporarily to prevent any infection. Our health teams are also prepared for any possibility," said Hilmi, who is also the Balik Pulau member of parliament.   

The pollution of a part of the sea water at the Batu Ferringhi Beach was covered by the media from last Monday and gained wide attention as the area is a popular tourist destination. 

Initial information from the Department of Environment showed that there were elements of e-coli bacteria in the water samples taken from Sungai Batu Feringhi.
