The family of convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby celebrated her release on parole in Indonesia today with dancing, singing and champagne, media reports said.

“It was just beautiful to see my beautiful Schapelle come out from those doors,” mother Roseleigh Rose told Australia’s Channel Seven.

Television pictures showed Corby being escorted through a crowd of reporters and cameramen outside Bali’s Kerobokan Prison.

She was 27 when she was arrested in 2004 after authorities at Denpasar airport found 4.2kg of marijuana in her luggage.

She has served nine years of a 20-year sentence for drug smuggling.

In 2012 she was granted a five-year sentence reduction after she applied for clemency from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Corby was visiting her sister Mercedes in Bali when she was arrested.

Under her parole conditions she must live with Mercedes in her Bali home until 2017.

Melbourne University law lecturer Tim Lindsey told national broadcaster ABC that Corby must be of good behaviour and report regularly to authorities to earn her freedom.

“The balance of her existing term would expire in September 2016 and... there would normally be required to be supervision for a further year, which could make it September 2017,” he said.
