Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) will not contest the Kajang by-election and at the same time, it will not throw in its support for Pakatan Rakyat as it "does not agree" with the reasons for the by-election.

In a statement issued today, PSM said it considered the by-election to be a "wasteful" exercise and that the justifications by PKR were "unreasonable".

PSM will thus not take part in in the by-election or campaign for a by-election that does not have its blessings, its chairperson Nasir Hashim said in a statement today.

"We also think that this by-election is a bad precedent for democracy," Nasir ( right ) added.

However, Nasir said that PSM would not take any position as to whether the people of Kajang should go out and vote in the by-election.

"The right to vote or not to vote is the absolute right of Kajang residents," he stressed.

However, the party noted that it "might" use the Kajang polls to campaign on larger issues that affect a majority of Malaysians - such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), free education, and further strengthening the minimum wage policy.

Despite campaigning and supporting Pakatan in the past and before the general election, PSM has never been accepted as an official partner in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
