The Election Commission (EC) should amend its laws to prevent any individual with pending court cases to contest in an election, said Perkasa.

Its chief Ibrahim Ali said this would prevent by-elections from wasting people's money, alluding to the Kajang by-election and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's candidacy.

Praising the EC for suggesting penalties for elected representatives to step down without valid reasons, Ibrahim said, "The EC should also amend its laws on eligibility.

"Individuals who have serious criminal cases pending in court should not be allowed to become candidates until the cases are settled," he said in a statement today.

Although Ibrahim did not refer to anyone in his statement, he was likely referring to the government's appeal against Anwar's acquittal from sodomy charges in January 2012.

Kajang state assemblyperson Lee Chin Cheh ( right ) resigned from the seat on Jan 27 to allow Anwar to contest and gain entry into the Selangor government.

EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof was reported in Bernama today saying the commission will study amendments to the election laws to prevent "the disease" of resigning representatives.

Ibrahim urged the EC to expedite the amendments.

"Democracy that is manipulated to satisfy the desires of an individual should be prevented because it wastes the rakyat's money and time, and all kinds of unproductive matters arise," said the controversial Malay rights lobbyist.
