Malacca has sufficient water supply in the state and no water rationing is needed for the time being said State Public Works, Public Utilities, Transport and Restoration Projects deputy exco member Zaidi Atan.

Zaidi said water supply was expected to reach the critical stage only if there was no rain until the end of March.

“Until now water supply in Malacca is at 70 percent and there are three water retention ponds in the state - two in Kesang and one in Ayer Keroh,” he said in a statement in Malacca yesterday.

As of yesterday, only water supply from two retention ponds in Kesang has been used to deliver water while the pond in Ayer Keroh has not been used.   

The state government is also undertaking a process to pump water from Sungai Muar, Johor, into the two dams in the state, at Durian Tunggal Dam and Jus Dam in Jasin.

He added that the state government was also looking at building a new dam in Ayer Limau, Alor Gajah, to cater for future water supply.
