The DAP central committee will meet next Wednesday to discuss the situation of DAP chairperson Karpal Singh, who was found guilty of sedition by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur today.

Karpal was convicted of making seditious remarks against Sultan Azlan Shah’s removal of Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as the then menteri besar of Perak five years ago.

“We will meet on Wednesday to discuss what further action DAP will take,” DAP national vice-chairperson and Sarawak state chief Chong Chieng Jen said.

“I think the matter will be appealed before the Court of Appeal,” he  said, pointing out that DAP looked at the case as a very serious matter.

The MP for Bandar Kuching added: “There were similar comments made by other people, but only Karpal Singh has been singled out for sedition, charged in court and found guilty.

“I think it is a very sad decision.”

The decision in the long-running case was delivered by Justice Azman Abdullah this morning.

Mitigation of sentence  will be heard on March 7 to allow time for the defence to produce Karpal's medical report.

Karpal, 74, can be jailed for not more than three years or fined no more than RM5,000, or both. If this sentence is passed, he will automatically lose his parliamentary seat.
