Will the MCA's about-turn with its decision to take up posts in the federal cabinet result in any difference in Umno's racist politics? This was the question posed by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today.

The MCA's abandonment of the decision not to accept ministerial and government posts only proves the party's corrupt political philosophy, Lim, who is also the Penang chief minister, said in a statement.

Describing the MCA decision taken at its extraordinary general meeting yesterday as a betrayal, Lim said MCA was willing to be a traitor to its own cause and a slave to racists and religious extremists to enjoy the perks and privileges of ministerial office.

He further asked what changes the MCA could do by joining the cabinet or obtaining government posts.

“The MCA has to date continued to entertain and support Utusan Malaysi a despite the paper's hatred and violent anti-non-Malay and anti non-Muslim rhetoric.

“MCA also chose to attack DAP Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s harmless video clip and sided with racists and extremists playing games to distract attention from BN’s price hikes of sugar, petrol, power tariffs and motor insurance premiums.

“MCA has also adopted Utusan Malaysia and Umno's racialism of the 2013 general election results by blaming the Chinese for opposing BN. Such ridiculous reasoning defies logic when the Chinese only comprise 24 percent of the population, while Pakatan obtained 51 percent of the popular vote.”

"It's for salaries and benefits for leaders'

Clearly, the Penang chief minister added, Malays, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans have voted for Pakatan to make the opposition coalition be the majority party of choice for Malaysians last year.

Lim further said the MCA was only entering the government merely to gain higher salaries and benefits for its leaders.

“MCA did not earn Umno's respect even when it obtained full support from voters in the past elections and yet still maintained the same number of ministerial posts.

“It is unlikely that Umno will accord MCA any respect or change any policy, since the MCA has now lost both the respect and support of voters,” he said.

If the MCA is to win back its support and respect, he added, it must prove that it is a party of integrity, ideals, principles and vision.

“However, the MCA is turning its back on these values by abandoning its election promise not to join government, because the lure of political posts is more attractive than any ideal or principle,” Lim argued.

The MCA central delegates at the party EGM yesterday voted almost unanimously to allow its leaders to enter the cabinet and take up government positions.
