The Kajang by-election should not be an avenue for BN to pour various development allocations into the constituency.

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who said this, felt that such allocations should only be channelled to the constituency if the voters in Kajang gave their mandate to BN candidate Chew Mei Fun to represent them.

"I think in the run-up to the Kajang by-election, there should be no development allocation given out, even for drains... if we win, then only we give," he said after launching the Umno People's Carnival organised by the party's Masjid Tanah division, Alor Gajah, today.

Also present were Melaka Chief Minister Idris Haron and Masjid Tanah Umno division head Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also home minister, said BN, the opposition in Selangor, should change its mentality so that it would not depend too much on channelling allocations to garner support.

Good chance

Ahmad Zahid also felt that BN had a good chance winning the by-election this March 23 as the voters, especially the Malays, had started supporting back BN after realising that the Selangor government had failed to provide the infrastructure the residents needed.

"As for the Chinese, they know that when Chew Mei Fun was the Petaling Jaya Utara MP, she was a good worker... always going to the ground to help her constituents.

"So, if she is fated to win this by-election, she will be carrying out her responsibilities just the same although Selangor is under the opposition pact (Pakatan Rakyat)," he said.

Ahmad Zahid hoped the voters in Kajang would make the right choice by giving the BN candidate the opportunity to serve them and reject Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who was only out to fulfil his own political ambition.
