Pakatan Rakyat's aim for the Kajang by-election of March 23 shall now be to register a victory so big that BN will lose its deposit, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang declared today.

Lim said this should be the response of Pakatan after Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's conviction in his Sodomy II case by the appellate court in Putrajaya yesterday.

"Winning alone will not be enough. A bigger majority won't be enough. We will aim to make BN lose its deposit. Can we?" Lim asked to applause from the crowd at the Pakatan Rakyat convention in Shah Alam today.

Lim admitted that such an ambition would be a "tall order" to achieve, but stressed that the time was right to deliver such a blow to BN.

"I know it is a tall order. But I think this is the occasion for it," Lim said when winding up his speech.

He also said that should another popularity survey be conducted on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's leadership today, after Anwar's conviction yesterday, Najib's popularity would tumble further.

Najib was at an all-time low in terms of popularity in a survey conducted in December, where he only had a 52 percent popularity rating.

"I am very sure, after yesterday, be it Malay, Chinese or Indian, Najib's popularity will fall among all races," Lim said in a jibe against the prime minister who said yesterday that he was willing to sacrifice his short-term popularity for the long-term future of the country.
