DAY 3 KAJANG What’s happening in the by-election campaign in the state constituency of Kajang? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.

10.40pm: According to Bernama , about 3,000 police officers and men will be deployed for the Kajang state by-election, said Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.      

He said they would be mobilised from several districts in Selangor, instead of dispatched from other states like before to save costs.      

They will be staying at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the General Operations Force camp in Kajang, he told reporters after attending a security briefing on the Kajang state by-election by Selangor police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan in Kajang today.      

Ahmad Zahid apart from ensuring the smooth running of the by-election, the police would also be controlling traffic to avoid congestion, particularly on the polling day. 

10pm: In Taman Kota Cheras Phase 1, Chew urges voters to choose her so that she can serve the people "directly" instead of going through assistants.

"I promise I will be a state assemblyperson that is easy to contact, and I will open a service centre within one or two weeks.

"I will meet with you all once again, and listen to your problems. And together we will overcome your problems. I promise," she tells 500 attendees.

8pm: Heavy rain seems to have eased the severe haze which hit Kajang today and has encouraged more people to join in the campaign fun.

About 400 turns up at PKR's ' wayang pacak ' (outdoor cinema) of hit 2012 movie and Chinese New Year film 'Happy Family'.

Although traditionally at a field, this wayang pacak at the night market at Chinese-majority area Sungai Chuai is under a roof.

The movie kicked off at 8pm with only 50 people watching but the crowd grows larger as they wait for Wan Azizah's arrival.

Wan Azizah later urges the crowd to stand up against injustice. She admits to being sad over Anwar's conviction but says she is only human.

As she leaves for the next event in her packed schedule, she hands out paper masks and stops many times to take pictures with those who have come.

7.20pm:  Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan is in Sungai Chua to accompany Chew Mei Fun during her night market rounds and makes reaches for the racial stereotype playbook during a speech.

He says that Chew represents the federal government and that the Chinese community can " untung (profit)" from this in terms of federal allocations.

"The Chinese prioritise untung ... In business, must untung . In politics, must untung ," says the deputy finance minister.

6pm: Candidates for the Kajang by-election seem to be making the most out of the haze.

PKR's Dr Wan Azizah distributed masks to children during a walkabout at the Kampung Sungai Sekamat evening market.

Traders also took the opportunity to ask Dr Wan Azizah to stop MPKJ from shutting down the market, allegedly because the congestion caused by the market endangers visitors.

5.25pm: Severe haze in Kajang has not interfered with party workers who are busy with the electoral campaign, although some street vendors and passers-by are wearing face masks.

 

From an overview, it looks like BN’s materials for its candidate Chew Mei Fun has more variety of themes and slogans compared to PKR's Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, as the campaign enters its third day.

 

BN has put up some  banners of Chew sitting beside a Kajang voter with the words "listening and understanding" and another of Chew playing with a baby with the slogan "concerned for needs of all people" all over Kajang town.

So far, the campaign materials for Wan Azizah does not look as merry nor as aggressive. Wan Azizah's banners mostly read with the slogan "From Kajang to Putrajaya." 

 

However, PKR has put up big billboards of Wan Azizah in some strategic places around Kajang. 

They can be seen in front of the Tesco shopping centre in Saujana Impian, and beside the road leading to the district voting centre of Sungai Jelok, near Kajang hospital. 

Taman Mesra campaign HQ chief operative Othman Karim said that PKR was still in the process of completing all campaign materials including posters and banners. This was because there was a change in candidate just two days before nomination, he noted.

5.20pm: Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi attends a briefing with police on the Kajang by-election.

 
He said a large portion of deployment will be for traffic control as Kajang is known for its bad traffic jams.

He also said that the Kajang polls police deployment is "not too costly" and "slightly cheaper than the Sungai Limau by-election".
 

12.50pm: Chew distributes 4,000 face masks to Kajang students and residents in front of SJKC Yu Hua, TV3 reported on its Facebook page.

11am: Chew holds a press conference to highlight an issue involving a Kajang resident who is shocked upon receiving an electricity bill that shows a whopping RM11,656.

She says the 72-year-old complainer, Liaw San, does not received electricity bills every month but he pays the full amount once he gets the occasional notification.

Chew said she will help Liaw by forwarding this case to the Kajang local council and Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

9.30am: Wan Azizah joins a group of Muslim women for a religious lecture at the Saujana Impian surau.

8.30am: BN's Chew Mei Fun goes on a walkabout at Section 7 Kajang, first meeting the breakfast crowd at PappaRich.

8am: PKR candidate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail goes on a walkabout to meet with traders at the Kajang market.
