DAY 8 KAJANG What’s happening in the by-election campaign in the state constituency of Kajang? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.

9:15pm:  There are many new gimmicks being tried out during this campaign and one of the highlight involves Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin playing basketball against the national women's team.
 
Khairy's team comprise of MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon, a couple of MCA members and some players from schools from the Tamn Setia vicinity.
 
Needless to say, Team KJ was defeated. They never stood a chance at winning, although eventual score gap of 53-59 was suspiciously narrow.
 
As with his previous sports outings, Khairy displayed his usual theatrics, striking various poses and creating some light moments to entertain the crowd of about 100 people.
 
Prior to the game, Khairy had questioned the PKR manifesto for stating that the state government will build sports facilities only after winning the Kajang by-election.
 
He, on the other hand, will instruct his ministry to "adopt" Kajang regardless of the results.
 
"They won in 2008 and 2013, but only wants to build sports facilities now for the youth," he said.

7pm: Attendees at an event by the Umno Senior Retirees Club are told to challenge their children if they slam the BN-led federal government.

Speaking at the Hulu Langat Education Department hall, government retiree Che Moin Umar said that this is as the youth never witnessed the trials and tribulations of the government and do not know better.

He said compared to in “countries controlled by white people” where “only Christmas is recognised” as a holiday, the Malaysian government compromises its position to fit all.

“Is this still not fair? If it is about freedom demanded by Comango, well look at what happened in Bukit Jalil? Six are dead.

“This is what is demanded by these groups, LGBT rights and all that if you read what they asked for in Geneva,” he said.

While he was talking several people from the 50 attendees stepped out of the hall.

“You should go in to ask him to stop talking. This is completely irrelevant,” one retiree told Malaysiakini .

5pm: The flyer war is on the rise as both BN and PKR highlight on national issues. Umno’s information department issues an eight-page brochure on issues the federal coalition is fighting for, namely the use of ‘Allah’.

The brochure by BN uses the image of the Yang di Pertuan Agong and has the words ‘Allah is exclusive to Islam’. It is distributed to the Malay-majority area in Kajang. The brochure also advertises the federal government’s programmes including Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia, Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia and progress under Najib Abdul Razak’s premiership.

The DAP, which is part of the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, issues a flyer on ‘What does BN want? and Kangkung (Water spinach) promises’ highlighting the rising cost of living.

The flyer which was distributed also shows Najib holding the vegetable with a balloon and a portion of the prime minister’s speech, “Kangkung was once expensive, now that the price is reduced why were there no accolades for the government?”

8am: Small banners have cropped up in Chinese-majority area Sungai Chua claiming that PKR candidate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will disappear from Kajang soon after the by-election is over.

The banners do not bear any party’s logo, but are in MCA’s party colours. They say that Wan Azizah will not continue her “journey with the rakyat” as promised.

They appear to be in response to Wan Azizah’s bunting inviting voters to join her on  her “journey” for justice in Malaysia.

Both banners attempt to ride on the popularity of Malaysian Chinese language film ‘The Journey’ which broke box office records last month.
