DAY 9 KAJANG What’s happening in the by-election campaign in the state constituency of Kajang? Quotable quotes, planned events and unplanned incidents as they take place.

9.00pm: It's raining heavily but an interfaith prayer session organised by MCA for those on board MH370 is taking place. 
 
The all Chinese crowd of about 300 people are lighting up candles and folding paper cranes for the session.
 
MCA president Liow Tiong Lai says this is the most difficult moment and everyone shall be united by hoping the return of aircraft passengers and cabin crews.
 
Brickfields Maha Vihara buddhist assoiation abbot K. Sri Dharmaratana then leads a chanting session, followed by other Taoist and Christian leaders, who offer their prayers respectively.

6pm: Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin urged Puteri Umno campaigners to “zumba, dance ( gelek ) and sway” their way into the hearts of Kajang voters.

“BN will not shirk its responsibilities to the rakyat. I want Puteri to spread this message while doing the zumba, gelek and swaying. Tell them to not believe in slander as (Pakatan Rakyat’s) slander factory is now working 25 hours a day,” he said.

He was speaking at a mass zumba party organised by Puteri Umno at the Hulu Langat Community College.

About 100 young ladies in pink grooved to Columbian singer Shakira’s songs during the at times sultry dance-exercise activity which originated in Shakira's home country.

They were led by a Bukit Bintang-based zumba instructor and was joined by actor Anne Ngasri.

The wing is organising a Zumba aerobic session at the Hulu Langat Community College, but BN's Chew Mei Fun has decided not to participate in the popular dance-exercise.

12 noon: Selangor police chief Mohd Shukri Dahlan says more than half of the advance voters have cast their ballots. He expects more than 90 percent of the 1,197 early voters to turn up by the time the polls close.

As for campaigning,a total of 39 ceramahs had been held up to last night. Of this, seven -  one by the BN and six by Pakatan Rakyat - did not have a police permit or approval. These will be investigated under the Election Offences Act.

Shukri says no untoward incidents have been reported since campaigning began on March 11, and that the security situation is under control.

On the planned PKR rally to protest the court decisions against Anwar Ibrahim and Karpal Singh respectively, he said the police have not received any formal application to hold the assembly.

He says the police will stand by if the rally proceeds at the Kajang stadium on Friday.

11.45am: PKR Youth head Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin has refuted a claim by BN's Chew Mei Fun attributing the drug-related death of six youths at a concert, to "policies of the Pakatan Rakyat-led government in Selangor".

He said the Future Music Festival Asia had been approved by the Tourism Ministry, and that the state government had merely provided the venue - the Bukit Jalil Stadium - as this was an event under 'Visit Malaysia Year 2014'.

Chew had issued a statement yesterday, claiming that the deaths could have been avoided if the state had deterred the mushrooming of massage parlours and cyber-cafes.

 

11.30am: EC Secretary Abdul Ghani Salleh tells reporters at a press conference that if the indelible ink fades, it will darken again within a few hours.

He adds that early voting is expected to conclude by about 4.30pm.

9.15am: PKR candidate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail also drops by the Kajang police station and greets officers who are queuing up to vote.

8.30am: MCA candidate Chew Mei Fun refuses to comment on remarks made by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin last night that she is a better candidate than PKR's Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as she doesn't have as many commitments.

"I don't wish to comment on it, because I'm also contesting here. Let us compete in a healthy and gentlemanly [sic] manner," she told reporters at the Kajang district police headquarters.

She had earlier breakfasted with police officers at the station, who are casting early ballots today.

8am: Early voting for the Kajang by-election has begun.

At the Kajang district police station, hundreds of police personnel line up to cast their ballots.

Most voters have been unable to wash off the purple indelible ink, even when washing their hands with soap, although at least one voter was able to partially wash it off.

Members of the press are not allowed into the polling station. However, no reason is given when an explanation is sought.
