The Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) said the water level in seven dams in the state are still above the critical level.

Its director, Md Khairi Selamat said the critical level at the dams was when the volume of water dropped to 30 percent which was equivalent to 69 million cubic metres.

He said various efforts were carried out to raise the volume of water in all dams in the state including the cloud seeding operations to induce rain on March 15 and 16.

However, a check by Luas yesterday found that the light rainfall failed to contribute towards a rise in the water capacity at six dams, namely Empangan Langat, Empangan Sungai Selangor, Empangan Sungai Tinggi, Empangan Batu, Empangan Semenyih and Empangan Tasik Subang.

“Only the Klang Gates dam showed a slight increase in capacity from 51.16 percent to 51.30 percent,” it said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today.

Besides the light rainfall, Md Khairi said the high rate of water vapourisation during the current hot weather was also a factor in the limited rise in water levels at the dams.

Luas would also continue the water rationing which was being imposed currently by Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) and reduce the release of water to extend the water storage life span in the state, he said.

In addition to the measures undertaken by the board, Luas also advised the people to exercise prudence in consuming water.
