MAS chief: Decision on quitting to be taken later

Armchair Newspaper: The world at large including Malaysians and those affected by this tragic loss, expect no less from MAS (Malaysia Airlines) and the government to assume collective and where appropriate, personal responsibility over the loss of MH370, its aftermath and the ensuing crisis management, communications and public relations fiasco.

It was bad that Malaysia took more than two weeks to announce that the plane had perished; what was even more appalling was how the world (and the families of the victims) was not provided with timely, accurate and truthful information.

This is most painful to the families of the victims to be put through this unnecessary and protracted period of anguish and agony.

The world at large finally saw what Malaysia has to live with all their lives - a country with systemic failure in governance, professionalism and accountability. I am afraid it is not an airplane and passengers that Malaysia lost, but our standing, pride and self-confidence as a nation.

Fairnsquare: It is really sad to see so much hate being expressed at a time of national grief. Holding the MAS chief executive officer (CEO) Ahmad Jauhari Yahya responsible for the crash of MH370, for which we do not even know the cause, is most immature.

This is a time of care and concern for the families affected by the crash and not a time to spur hate. With the involvement of the international community, the truth leading to the crash will be inevitably revealed and any question of responsibility can be expressed then.

Now we need to unite and look at this as our national responsibility. Our prayers and condolences go to the families of the crash victims.

Kenvy11: Ahmad Jauhari should not be blamed as he has been doing an excellent job so far. If anybody should resign or should be sacked, it has to be the military chief (Air Force chief General Rodzali Daud) as his men were sleeping on the job.

'Intruder plane was not hostile' is pure bullshit. Also if he had given the proper information earlier, we wouldn't have gone on a wild goose chase in the South China Sea.

Black Knight Returns: For as long as Ahmad Jauhari stays in MAS, it will deteriorate even further. It is bad enough the bottom line is in the worst shape it has ever been in the history of the airline.

Its share prices are at an all-time low, and coupled with his stubbornness to cling on to his position only means business will suffer even more.

China is a major market for Malaysian tourism. This coupled with the fact that the person who has displayed his incompetence to the world remains, means our tourism industry is going to be even worse and the airline will suffer even worse consequences.

This also applies to the Department Civil Aviation (DCA) chief. The government must demonstrate a sincere desire to clean up and make things more effective and safe, and replace these people with more effective professionals who will over time, give the airline the credibility it now so urgently requires.

Homesick: I agree with some of the comments being made in Malaysiakini that the Defence Ministry should take full responsibility for this tragedy.

The fact of the matter is the first two or three days after MH370 went missing, the authorities treated this incident like a domestic political issue that they could spin, cover up, and sweep under the carpet.

This corrupt and unscrupulous practice is so ingrained into Umno-BN culture that it has become a habit - thinking that there is always the Malaysian kangaroo court to protect them.

Whatshappenning: Come on. It is not easy to handle this major crisis. Why ask the MAS CEO to resign? He did not plan this crisis. It is like blaming the parents when the children are undisciplined.

Anonymous#007: Ahmad Jauhari, acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, Premier Najib Abdul Razak, DCA chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman and Air Force chief General Rodzali Daud should all resign or be sacked.

They are jointly responsible for the loss of the lives on MM370 because it happened under their watch. The stray flight could have been intercepted and possibly, deaths prevented.

No matter what the cause of the crash, if that is confirmed, these people are accountable for the lack of action in the crucial hour or two after the flight disappeared, and for their continued lack of urgency, knowledge and intellectual capacity to manage the SAR (search and rescue) operation.

This has resulted in more valuable time being wasted. And yes, the SMS message from MAS to relatives of those on board, is the straw that broke the camel's back.

Abasir: Apart from sharing the pain of those left behind, my sympathies are with Ahmad Jauhari and the MAS team for all that they have had to put up with.

While much of the criticism leveled at the regime and its incompetent leaders is both accurate and well deserved, Ahmad Jauhari and his team are deserving of our unqualified support.

They have had to deal with a grossly incompetent bunch at the DCA, the Armed Forces, Immigration and the ministries while managing the emotions and expectations of the next of kin.

We must learn to identify and commiserate with all the victims, which in this case includes MAS as well as the millions of hapless Malaysians who will have to explain the idiocy of the regime wherever they go.

Tikusmati: Ahmad Jauhari, if and when you resign, please write a book on this incident revealing the truth and nothing but whole truth. I believe you are merely a victim of circumstances because those handling the situation are there not on merit.

At least, you have worked in the corporate world. Tell the world the truth and always remember it is not because you want to, but because you owe it to the families of those lost in these tragic circumstances.

Che: Those who know Ahmad Jauhari well will know that he is just being made a scapegoat. AJ, as he is popularly known, has always been a very intelligent, hardworking and conscientious CEO in other companies he worked in.

It was because of his success in other companies that he was asked to take over the job of MAS CEO, when he could have had other more attractive posts.

He had not been long in MAS when this happens. Poor guy, he was not given the time. To all those who ask for his blood, be fair. Just go through all the contradictions, the mishaps, the non-disclosure of facts, etc. Were these all his fault?

Odin: If you want Ahmad Jauhari to resign his position, then all the others holding top positions and who are involved in this matter must also do the same. In a sense, Ahmad Jauhari is merely a minor cog in this machine of miserable mischance.

Cantabrigian: Jauhari is a good man, no doubt. Please give him some space. While all of us are busy complaining and criticising, he had to jointly coordinate the most difficult SAR operation that the modern world has ever seen.

If he feels that he should resign to restore his honour as well as MAS' reputation, let him do so out of his own will.

YUNoAnon: This is one time I cannot find fault in him to say he must resign. This incident involves the military and the DCA as well. He is just the airline operator, air traffic is not his jurisdiction.

If anything, I would demand those who are responsible for the radar data and those who delayed sharing the data, to be responsible and explain.

Those involved on the ground and are doing SAR, are to be commended. Those who are calling the shots, should be shot.
