Pakatan Rakyat will bring up its unhappiness with the conduct of the country’s judiciary in Parliament soon, and will urge the House and its speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia to take a firm stand on the issue.

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim said today that Pakatan is discussing the means to bring this matter up in the Parliament, following his sodomy conviction and DAP supremo Karpal Singh’s sedition conviction.

“Where else can we go, if not the Parliament? To the streets?” Anwar asked during a press conference today, during which he also alleged that the judiciary is increasingly taking a racial stance and is not protecting the rights of ethnic minorities.

“There seems to be a competition in the judiciary to see who is more pro-Umno. This competition is killing the judiciary,” he said.

He said that the Parliament has to be more assertive on matter such as these, and should not use the “standard argument” about separation of powers.

“We insist the speaker takes this matter seriously,” Anwar said.

It is understood that the opposition would move a motion regarding this matter sometime next week.

Meanwhile, Anwar also admitted that he has “difficulty defending” his close friend, Turkey Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan following the latter’s banning of Twitter in his country.

“The media and the television there is still free. But I do not agree in principle with this. I do not support anything that goes against democracy,” he said.
