Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 87, who was awarded the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature, was hospitalised in Mexico City, a spokesperson for Mexico’s Health Ministry told dpa yesterday.

The author of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ (1967), who has been living in Mexico City for decades, was being treated at the Salvador Zubiran National Institute of Medican Science.

MVS Radio reported that the reason for Garcia Marquez’s admission into hospital was an episode of delirium, which is medically defined as an alteration in cognition in the brain.

Garcia Marquez celebrated his 87th birthday on March 6. On that occasion, he left his home for a few minutes to greet photographers and reporters outside, although he did not speak to them.
