Rare earths processing plant, Lynas has complied with the legal requirements set by the Department of Environment (DOE) and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) during its temporary operating licence (TOL) period.

Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah said Lynas had obtained approval from the International Trade and Industry Ministry and Malaysian Investment Development Board to market oxide and chloride products from the Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) in Pahang.

“These products include Praseodymium Neodymium Chloride, which is categorised as non-dangerous and does not contain any radioactive materials,” he told reporters after the launch of 31 products from the ministry’s various agencies’ research and development efforts in tandem with the Mosti Commercialisation Year 2014 (MCY2014) in Malacca today.

He was commenting on a statement by Kuantan Member of Parliament Fuziah Salleh, who questioned Lynas’ compliance to the regulations following the NdPr Chloride chemical spill last March 28.

In the 9am incident, 13 out of the 15 NdPr Chloride-laden barrels were spilled on the road after it fell from a trailer at Km149, Jalan Kuantan- Kuala Lumpur near Kampung Sungai Kepong, Lanchang, Temerloh.

Four of the barrels were reported to be broken during transportation from Gebeng, Kuantan to Port Klang, Selangor.
