MCA has hit back at right-wing Malay rights group Perkasa after being accused of doing nothing over the 'Allah' issue.

 

"Far from remaining silent in the issue of the 'Allah' word, a group of MCA lawyers representing MCA has held a watching brief for the case at the Federal Court.

 

"This shows the sincerity and persistence of MCA to seek a legal solution based on the law through the judiciary system compared to Perkasa which demonstrated outside the Federal Court during the case," said MCA legal bureau chief Eric Choo.

 

Christian publication The Herald is appealing a Court of Appeal decision which upheld a government ban against it from using the word 'Allah'.

 

Conservative groups such as Perkasa are opposed the appeal and insist the word 'Allah' is exclusive only for Muslims.

 

On Friday, Perkasa reportedly accused MCA of attempting to meddle in Islamic affairs after it opposed PAS-led Kelantan's plan to implement hudud law.

 

The right wing group further accused the party of being biased when it remained silent over Christian defiance against the 'Allah' ban.

 

Choo said the resolution of the 'Allah' issue should be left the courts while MCA's opposition to PAS' hudud law was because it is inconsistent with the Federal Constitution.

 

"Furthermore, the PAS administration has a track record of implementing Islamic law on non-Muslims.

 

"Therefore it is MCA's duty and responsibility to oppose and prevent any attempts by the PAS administration that will affect the peace and harmony of the country," he said.
