Retract ‘close down’ remark, Matta tells Junaidi

Geronimo: "I would say these resorts on small, isolated islands should be closed. No one can guarantee the safety of these places when they are situated far off the coast," said Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

 

Islands big or small, isolated or otherwise are part of our country called Malaysia, and because of this, the government is duty bound to protect every inch of its soil to the last breath, and not taking the easy way out by giving flimsy excuses. 

 

If they can't protect the people on these islands, why not "sell" them to the Philippines? That would be another easy way of getting rid of a problem, isn't it Wan Junaidi?

 

Swipenter: By Wan Junaidi's logic, we should also close down MAS to prevent another MH370-like incident. That could even save taxpayers billions of ringgit used to keep MAS afloat and flying.

 

I thought that his boss (Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) is real arrogant and prone to shoot his mouth off, this man is even worse than the former.

 

Not Smart: If the deputy home minister suggests to close the resort in Sabah, it only goes to show that the ministry is not capable to provide security for a tiny island. What more can we expect for the whole nation.        

 

Wan Junaidi's suggestion is not a surprise because that's all he has. By this suggestion and his recent racial comments , he is not up to the mark to hold the deputy's post.

 

Further, his superior is equally as 'good' as him and I wonder how this vital ministry is funtioning.

 

Ferdtan: Our streets are not safe from crimes, not only to the tourists but also to Malaysians. 

 

So to apply what Wan Junaidi had said - close down the resorts on remote islands as the government cannot guarantee security - then we might as well ban all tourists from coming to our country.

 

Can our police guarantee security to all tourists in Malaysia, not necessary in remote islands in Sabah?

 

Obviously it is not possible; you never know, some tourists may like to walk in some quiet neighbourhood whereby our police cannot be around all the time.

Is closing the business (meaning tourism) the only solution you, as a minister, can think of? Sheesh, it sucks to have such kind of leaders in our government.

 

Clearwater: In Klang Valley suburbs, residents have to hire private security and set up gated neighborhoods, at their own cost, to combat burglaries and related crime.

 

Wan Junaidi cannot even assure residents safety in the federal capital. These vacation island resorts in Sabah are better advised to organise their own safety measures.

 

Wg321: A patrol boat is more useful than a ‘white elephant’ submarine. For the price of one Scorpene submarine, we can buy perhaps at least 50 vessels to guard the porous coastal areas of Sabah against pirates and illegal immigrants.

 

The two ‘white elephant’ submarines cannot even take part in the search and rescue operation of MH370 in the South China Sea, not to mention the Indian Ocean.

 

Whether you like it or not, Sabah coastal areas has become the Somalia of the East as long as the illegal immigrants in Sabah and those sympathisers under Project M become the eyes and ears of the pirates.

 

As a result, the pirates can pick and choose where to strike. The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) can only react after the pirates have struck and disappeared in the Philippines with their hostages.

 

This is just like the Vietnam War where the Vietcongs and the North Vietnamese choose the battlefields to fight. That was why the American lost the Vietnam War.

 

Sabahans should not put the cart before the horse. They should blame their local corrupt leaders for supporting the wrong side. Indeed, there is an element of truth in Teresa Kok’s Chinese New Year’s video clip about these crimson pirates.

 

Bash: Honestly, security is the responsibility of all - the authorities, employers and citizens. Are the resorts employing illegal immigrants and do proper screening? And when laws are flouted are these employers punished?

 

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) should give ideas and work closely with the authorities to guarantee the safety of tourists, and not just shout.

 

J Ng: Wan Junaidi’s statement is not totally invalid. There is no way for our security forces to ensure foolproof security in highly remote places. This country has enough negative publicity and we should not allow such unsafe places to be exploited further.

 

His only stupidity is in his calling for these resorts to beef up their own security. Surely, if they can do it, then there is no reason why our security forces should delegate this responsibility to them.

 

This mentality and altitude of our ministers and authorities must change. It clearly shows how irresponsible our government has become.

 

A good example is the mushrooming privately-owned security outfits in residential areas. It is an insult to all Malaysians to have a government with such mentality.

So if criminal acts happens in isolated rural areas, should we evacuate the kampongs and allow the thugs and terrorists to take over?

 

Headhunter: This is the BN way; when they can't handle a problem and cannot wish it away, they resort to shortcuts, unproductive and unworkable solutions.

 

When the people object, they threaten to take away your citizenship, persecute you or brand you as an agent provocateur of the opposition.

 

They are incapable of using the resources available in spite of boasting that they are the best our hard-earned money can buy.

 

Lim Chong Leong: When a mosquito bites your leg, cut it off. That is basically what Wan Junaidi is saying.

 

And going by his logic, we might as well close all our towns and cities because there are snatch thefts and robberies there.

 

This is stupid but he is useful to PM Najib Razak because he makes the Umno chief look good.
