The Selangor state assembly descended into chaos this morning over Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case, even though he is not a member of the House.

The topic came up as state assemblypersons debated the integrity of the courts.

Ng Suee Lim (DAP-Sekinchan, right ), in debating the motion of thanks on the royal address, criticised the BN's failure to fulfil its election promises in Selangor while it was in power.

Ng pointed out BN had promised to build a third bridge in Klang, but did not follow through with this.

Instead, he said, the BN organised a group of single mothers to sue the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government on the basis that it had failed to fulfil its election pledge of providing them an allowance of RM100 a month.

Thankfully though, he added, the court threw out the case shortly before the 13th general election last year.

At this Shahrum Mohd Sharif (BN-Dengkil), Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan (BN-Batang Kali) and state opposition leader Shamsuddin Lias (BN-Sungai Burong) interjected in protest.

Mat Nadzari asked if Pakatan and Ng were now acknowledging that the judiciary was independent, by boasting about a case that favoured their interests.

Ng replied that the courts are “generally transparent” but that interference happens in high-profile cases such as the government's appeal in Anwar's sodomy verdict.

This, he said, had been expedited ahead of the Kajang by-election which Anwar was supposed to contest.

Shamsuddin (left) hit back that it was Anwar's fault for repeatedly delaying the hearings since 2009.

"This is the syndrome of the (federal) opposition. When the court favours them, it is good. when it does not, that they say all kinds of things," Shamsuddin said.

On March 7, Anwar was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to five years in jail by the Court of Appeal. However, it granted him a stay of execution pending appeal in the Federal Court.

The accusations and counter-accusations dragged on for about 10 minutes before speaker Hannah Yeoh reined them in and asked they continue with the motion of thanks.

"How did it arrive at the sodomy case from discussion about the third bridge?" Yeoh mused.
