Penang gets second Consumer Claims Tribunal
The Penang Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Office has set up the state’s second Tribunal for Consumer Claims in efforts to educate people on consumer rights.
The Penang Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Office has set up the state’s second Tribunal for Consumer Claims in efforts to educate people on consumer rights.
Its acting director Abdul Rosik Yakub said the tribunal, which was opened today, was fully equipped to handle consumer claims against unethical businesses, especially from the mainland.
“This tribunal is also the first branch to be fully-fitted like a civil court in Malaysia. Prior to this all the cases from Seberang Perai Tengah used to be heard in a meeting room on an ad-hoc basis from June 2010.
“Apart from a conducive and comfortable atmosphere the tribunal also enables consumers in the area to file their complaints," he told a press conference in Butterworth today.
The Tribunal for Consumer Claims is an independent body established under Section 85, Part XII of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 to provide an alternative forum apart from civil action for consumers.
Abdul Rosik said the first hearing was scheduled for April 14 with a total of 15 cases for that day, including cases related to house renovation, utility services and tour packages.
“This court is not only meant to resolve cases but will also serve to educate consumers on the law and their rights,” he said.
He added that last year 569 cases were filed in the state of which 35 were heard and 170 were settled out of court.
As of March this year 116 cases have been filed and 12 hearings were conducted, he said.
