Some 20 student activists, who wanted to hand over a memorandum to Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, were stopped outside the main gate of the Selangor state government building for four hours.

The enraged students later claimed that Pakatan Rakyat was no different than BN.

The students, comprising members of Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), Pro-Mahasiswa Nasional and Demi Mahasisawa Unisel (DMU), are calling on the Pakatan state government to implement free education in University Selangor (Unisel).

Under the "Free Academic 2.0" campaign banner, the students held a protest at the main entrance of the building since 11am but were not allowed to enter into the compound.

Speaking to Malaysiakini , SMM president Mohammed Bukhairy Mohammed Sofian said the security guards were instructed to close all three main gates.

"We were treated badly, same as (what )Umno and BN (had done) when we protested against them over the same issue," he added.

Mohammed Bukhairy said that even DAP Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming and other visitors were not allowed to enter.

He added that the menteri besar's private secretary approached them to accept their memorandum but the students had insisted on entering to explain their demand to all the state assemblypersons, who were attending the sitting at the state assembly located next to the state building.

"This is even worse than Parliament, I think that the Selangor state administration is undemocratic," he said, adding that the students decided to disperse at 3pm.

Acknowledging that education is under the federal government’s jurisdiction, the student leader said that Unisel is under the control of the state government, right from the appointment of the vice-chancellor to administration staff members.

Therefore, Mohamed Bukhairy urged the state government to make Unisel the "model" for BN.

"Before this, Pakatan talked about free education in their manifesto, but we never heard of it after the (13th) general election even though they are still governing Selangor.

"So if Pakatan is serious about free education, they should implement it in Unisel," he added.
