The institution of the Malay rulers is not a mere decorative ornament as it is a key institution in the federal constitution which must be dynamic in facing challenges and capable of meeting demands, said the Regent of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah.

He said a Malay ruler sat on the throne as a ruler and not an administrator and had to be fair to all the people regardless of race and religion.  

"Truly, the throne must be at all times be non-partisan, in fact it must tower above all partisan political polemics to ensure the role of the throne is well-accepted, when it is needed to arbitrate to solve any discord in the country," he said.

He was speaking at an investiture in conjunction with the 86th birthday of Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak at Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar today.

Raja Nazrin said the institution played a key role as the pillar of stability, source of justice, core of unity, umbrella of union and instrument of coalition in diversity.   

He said the institution must be further enriched so that it was capable of playing an even greater role in an ever changing era.

Raja Nazrin said the institution must take a lesson from the examples of great leadership which not only succeeded in getting the solid support of the people but also the pleasure of Allah.

"Prophet Muhammad was admired because of the success of his leadership which reflected the traits of humility, trustworthiness and fairness.

"He prioritised the culture of consultation, valuing the opinions of those who are more discerning, evaluating information carefully before making a decision in a wise manner," he said.

The Prophet was a transformative leader who inspired his followers to always be humble, trustworthy and fair despite a decision not favouring his group or self, Raja Nazrin said.

Raja Nazrin added that the nobleness of the institution must be protected from any besmirchment to ensure the people stayed loyal.
