The political career of Karpal Singh was both praised and criticised by Utusan Malaysia on the day of his funeral.
 
In a editorial piece by Awang Selamat, believed to be the collective voice of Utusan's editors, Karpal is described as a gentleman and a person of integrity, compared to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
 
"Unlike Anwar, Karpal relinquished his position as DAP chairperson pending his appeal over his conviction for sedition. But Anwar, did not," wrote Awang.
 
Awang said that Karpal is also more mature compared to many DAP and PKR leaders, pointing out that the latter was against boycotting certain media outlets, which reflects transparency and openness. 
 
"Also, it is fresh in my memory that Karpal had advised Anwar to 'repent' when the latter wanted to form a government through defections after the 2008 general election.
 
"In fact, Karpal had stated that Anwar was unfit to lead Pakatan Rakyat for wanting to do so," he said.
 
As for criticisms, Utusan said Karpal exploited as a political shield for veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang.
 
"This includes the controversy where he said that an Islamic state can only be formed over his dead body.
 
"Karpal's influence also indirectly helped Kit Siang solidify his grip over DAP, allowing (the latter's son) Guan Eng to be party secretary-general and Penang chief minister.
 
"It would be nearly impossible for Kit Siang or Guan Eng to find another non-Chinese leader who is as loyal and committed as Karpal.
 
"The Lim Dynasty is so indebted to Karpal," he said.
