Drop dad's charge? Gobind says 'no thanks'

Fair Play: Gobind Singh Deo, you did the right by rejecting the suggestion to ask the attorney-general (AG) to drop the sedition charge against your father. He had fought all his life for righteousness.

Continue this fight and the rakyat will be with you all the way. The favour, if requested and granted by the AG, would be tainted and be a very black spot against the otherwise clean white sheet of your late father's illustrious political career.

Aries46: When Karpal said that the ruler can be taken to court following the power grab in Perak most people took it as a matter of fact.

There was nothing malicious or sinister about the observation, and coming from the senior lawyer it was taken to be the interpretation of what was in the constitution.

But those that conspired and manipulated the fluid situation in the state assembly seized the opportunity to deflect the guilt and scandal. And it was dumped on their long time foe - the people's champion.

Gobind is right in not seeking sympathy where none exists. It would amount to kneeling before those that conspired and nailed his father Karpal. Let us cherish him the way he was and let him rest in peace.

Real Truth: One must understand that Karpal was charged for telling the truth. What he said was not seditious at all. Our fight must go on for the future of this nation and its justice system. We must fight an evil government. If we are united, we can fight on for justice.

Anonymous$&@?: Not only was Karpal charged for telling the truth, he was charged for his professionalism discharging his duties as a lawyer. Shame on the three judges and the AG. These people don't deserve to be in the legal profession, they are stooges more like it.

RR: As a matter of principle, this case should be fought and won at the Appeals Court and Apex court. Otherwise it will remain a precedent and lawyers cannot in future express legal opinions against any ruler and would be found guilty by citing Karpal's case decided at High Court.

Anonymous_3e21: That is the way to go. No need to beg and let the fight begin. Throughout his years, Karpal's fight was for justice and let us remember him as a simple and just person. For those who think power is everything and abusing it will ensure they rule forever, their day will come sooner rather than later.

History never lies. Even in his death, Karpal's vision lives on.

Gerard Lourdesamy: I agree Gobind, fight the sedition charge all the way to the Federal Court and make the government, police, AG and judiciary look like fools in the eyes of the world. This is nothing but a pathetic excuse for a corrupt and scandal ridden democracy relying on an outdated colonial law enacted in 1948 to stifle fundamental freedoms and liberties.

If rulers can be charged or sued in the Special Court and they are not above the law, how can criticism of them be sedition if the statement does not call for the institution and the rulers' powers and prerogatives to be abolished?

The Sedition Act is an anathema to the federal constitution because it negates and not restricts the fundamental liberties in Part II, is disproportionate to the mischief that it seeks to prevent and has the effect of altering the basic structure of the constitution as it prohibits any criticism of the institutions of the state.

Karpal Singh never needed any favours from this government or its rulers throughout his illustrious career.

Anonymous_5fb: The sedition charge on Karpal Singh is a farce in the first place. Whether Federal Court will rule in favour or not, our beloved Karpal Singh is still as clean as a sheet of white paper.

What is instead tainted is Umno/BN, the judiciary, AG, royalty and of course the fake Malay lawyer. A ruling in favour of Karpal Singh's appeal will only help in slowing down the process of damage already inflicted on the whole country.

Fair&Just: Fight the charge all the way in order to prove that good shall overcome evil. Do not falter, fight all the way to the highest court with the kangaroos, even if you lose along the way.

War Child: I was at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall last night for Karpal's memorial despite being wheelchair bound. The main hall was simply too small for such a large crowd which also filled the smaller adjacent halls.

There was a huge crowd standing outside the hall. Thanks to the good sense of the organisers big screens were set up to allow us to follow the proceedings in the main hall. The weather was fine after the heavy downpour in the afternoon.

I believe we were all there to seek closure and to release our emotional tension of the last one week. Tears naturally rolled down my cheeks when Gobind gave his speech.

On the way home the words of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng comforted me when he said, "Karpal needed no honours nor awards while he was alive. The tears and love of thousands who turn up at his wake and funeral would have pleased him enough"

Onyourtoes: Karpal was a great man; that is why the outpouring of grief was so spontaneous and intense. But in many ways, it is also the manifestation of intense anger and frustration of the majority of Malaysians at a regime that has long lost its credentials and credibility to rule.

The people are using every occasion and every opportunity to show their defiance, their fortitude, and their defiance.

Anonymous_3e06: Justice is not won by sympathy, but because it is the just thing to do. If the judges are forced not to see justice, that is their problem. They can be politically blinded.
