Since the Prevention of Crime Act (PCA) (Amendment and Extension) 2013 was enforced last April 2 to fight organised and serious crimes, 116 people have been arrested throughout the country.

Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said most of the arrests involved serious crimes, violence and gangsterism.

"So far no politicians have been arrested," he told a media conference after officiating at the symposium on 'Crime Prevention From The Islamic Perspective' in KL yesterday.

Also present were inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar and police management director Mohamad Fuzi Harun.            

Commenting on PCA, Wan Junaidi said the panel for the act, which was  appointed two weeks ago, had paid a courtesy call on Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The act, among others, empowers the Crime Prevention Board to issue directives to detain criminals for two years.     

The implementation of the act to fight and prevent crimes more effectively is to allow detention without trial based on the interest of public order and security or crime prevention.

Meanwhile commenting on the latest development on the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, Khalid said so far the police had recorded 287 statements and more such statements would be taken after this.     

On the planned gathering to oppose the Goods and Service Tax this May 1, he said the police would take legal action on the participants if they were still adamant and cause commotions.     

It is understood the group will hold the gathering in Dataran Merdeka.
