Instead of just opposing PAS' attempts to introduce hudud law in Kelantan, MIC is seeking a meeting with PAS leaders to discuss the issue, the party's strategic director S Vell Paari said today.

In a statement, Vell Paari, said a request has been sent to PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu to arrange for a meeting between a delegation of MIC and PAS representatives.

"On the same note, we in MIC understand and recognise the fact that hudud is considered divine ordained law by Muslims," he said.

"But the question is how it can be implemented effectively in a multiracial nation, which is recognised by the Federal Constitution to be a secular state," he stated.

Vell Paari said that the request for a meeting has been forwarded to PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali by Mohamad Sabu.

"I hope this historical meeting between PAS and MIC will become a reality," he said.

Vell Paari said one of his reasonings against Hudud was that if it had been in place earlier, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim could have been "stoned to death" after being found guilty of sodomy and corruption, which was later overturned.

"But since it was civil law and there was the avenue for appeals, he was later found not guilty and released even though he had spent a long time in prison. But my point is he was alive to seek appeal," he said.

"Let us say hands are chopped for theft and later it was discovered that the person was innocent, you cannot attach the dismembered hand can you?" he asked.

"On the same note, we must also revisit capital punishment. This must be abolished as well as the end result is the same," he added.
