The Kelantan state government has no power to stop people from flying kites near Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa.

State Culture, Tourism and Heritage Commitee chairperson Md Anizam Abdul Rahman said only awareness on the danger of flying kites near airports could stop them from engaging in the activity.

“Kite-flying is a traditional activity done only during the dry season. We agree with the recommendations of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) that the people fly kites 5km from the airport,” he told reporters at a function with the Kelantan media in Kota Baru today.

Md Anizam urged the people to refrain from flying kites in highly risky areas, particularly those near airports.

On April 21, the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) reminded the people not to fly kites near airports as it poses a danger to aircraft.

Its Kelantan manager, Su’aidi Yusoff, said kites can fly up to 300m in the and air could interfere with the flight path of an aircraft.

“If you want to fly kites, please do it 5km away from the airport boundary and far from the flight path of aircraft,” he told a press conference.
