SENATE The government has no plans to build a low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) as Terminal One of the airport is being upgraded to cater for the increase in passengers, the Dewan Negara was told today.

Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the upgrading work was almost completed and when fully completed, the terminal would be able to accommodate nine million passengers a year, compared with only 3.5 million currently through the temporary operation at Terminal Two.

He said this in response to a question by Senator Chin Su Phin who wanted to know whether the government would consider building a terminal for low-cost carriers at KKIA.

In a related development, Abdul Aziz said the ministry had instructed Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to implement the process of transferring the operations of AirAsia and other airline companies from Terminal Two to Terminal One at KKIA.

Operations at Terminal One of KKIA was transferred to Terminal Two in 2006 to facilitate the upgrading work.
