Reading between the lines on what Obama said
YOURSAY ‘I do not think that Obama equated PM's intelligence to that of a chimp.’
'Obama equated Najib's intelligence to chimp's'
LKT: PM Najib Razak thought that US President Barack Obama’s visit would have been a once in a lifetime opportunity for him and his wife to positively enhance their image among their followers and be able to tell the ‘orang orang kampong’ that Najib is a respected world leader which even the US president will come to seek his advice.
Unfortunately, Obama did things his way and Najib got roasted. As for Rosmah Mansor, Michelle did not even bother to pack for the trip. Rosmah was royally snub.
Anticonmen: When Najib could not pronounce the word "proliferation", Obama was tactful in saying, "That's a hard one".
Obama is tactful for a reason and would have guessed by now that these Umno "ministers" were trying to impress him with hollow rhetoric about "cooperation with others", "establishing good relations", "working together", "proliferation", blah, blah, etc, when they do not even display equality in treatment of all its citizens at home in accordance with the original constitution, use religion to divide its people, are good in fixing up political opponents and simply refuse to cooperate with opposition parties like Pakatan Rakyat and have been putting their hands in the till for ages.
Obama knows political rhetoric is when people in power don't really practice what they preach.
Fair Play: The sole intention of Obama's visit was to shore up the image of Najib as a dynamic and moderate leader. However, things got wrong right from the beginning.
Few Malaysians could grasp the nuances and subtlety of words used in political English to score political points.
An insult is often clothed in flattering words for maximum effect. And believe me, Raub MP Ariff Sabri, you go it dead right.
Cogito Ergo Sum: Indeed, a description befitting the action. This should be put up as one of the nastiest, yet honest, analyses of the Obama visit. Please write on.
Kickstart: In the context of Obama's comments, 'instincts' here has the meaning of 'first reaction' or 'intuition'. As in 'he instinctively knows what to do in such a situation'.
It's a compliment for Najib, the way I read it.
Dearpixel: I cannot for the life of me understand what form of logic Ariff is using to get from ‘instinct’ to ‘chimpanzee’. His logic falls at the first hurdle. Don't humans have instinct, not just animals?
The fuller quote is certainly not a diplomatic way of saying anything other than being complimentary to Najib.
Where Ariff gets 'Hey man I think you suck' from this is beyond me. Can someone explain his logic? Or is he just stupid like so many others in government?
Finally, how can Ariff presume to know what Obama intended to say?
Some commenters here say Ariff nailed it. Take off your politically-tinted glasses. The level of stupidity on display is astounding.
Anonymous_1397678952: I am not sure what the point of this article is. And I certainly do not agree with the statements purportedly made by Ariff Sabri.
I do not think that Obama equated the PM's intelligence to that of a chimp. On the contrary, he appeared to respect the PM. He described him as a man of moderation and vision.
We might disagree with Obama but that is not a reason to distort what was actually said. That is low-level politics.
Zen: Now it is confirmed. What DAP MP Ariff Sabri have uttered about Obama likening him to be like chimpanzee and orang utan in term of intelligence is DAP’s official thinking.
This is the level of DAP leaders who are courting Malaysians to elect them to rule this nation. It also reveal that Malays, Chinese and Indians in DAP share the same DNA of hatred towards other Malay leaders.
Do we need these types of MPs who likened other humans as animal to rule Malaysia? Even Najib who has been painted as most evil did not call or likened his political opponents as animal.
So now, DAP, are you going to tell the Malaysians how you educate your MPs? Is this guy the only leader amongst you that are not civic and ethic minded or are there more of this kind in your fold?
Do you expect peaceful and civic minded Malaysians to choose you all with this level of ethics and IQ to rule Malaysia?
Cocomomo: I notice that there are certain comments indicating they could not understand proper English. Neither have read or listened to the comments by Obama.
Obama gave positive comments (which as expected were highlighted by the pro-government media) as well as very critical ones worded as areas for improvement.
The president did not give a clean bill of health as some who have selective reading, or chose to have selective understanding, think he did.
Hussein: Ariff Sabri, when speaking to those who have problem to understand English, you need to lower your standard in par with his capability.
This is exactly what happened to our educational system in Malaysia which we once very proud of.
