Umno-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia has claimed that the May 1 protest against the Good and Services Tax (GST) was infiltrated by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

In a commentary piece by Awang Selamat, a pseudonym used by the newspaper to express its editorial stance, it warned that rallies such as the anti-GST protest may eventually lead to a gay parade.

"Imagine a parade of naked people and those of the same gender kissing each other in front of Dataran Merdeka," said Mingguan Malaysia , the weekend edition of Utusan Malaysia .

 

The newspaper claimed that the LGBT community was using street rallies to make demands which could eventually lead to the suggested scenario.

 

"Every time there are such rallies, more LGBTs come forward (to participate), be it those who openly declare their status or otherwise.

 

"Clearly, the LGBT community is stepping up their efforts to make various demands, including being able to have a parade like in the west," it said.

 

Some 50,000 people turned up at Dataran Merdeka on May 1 to oppose the GST, which was last month passed by Parliament and is expected to come into force on April 1, 2015.
