PAS' volunteer corp Unit Amal has denied involvement in the alleged beating up of members of the public after the anti-GST protest on May 1.

 

"Unit Amal strongly denies that we were involved in the incident," Selangor Unit Amal chief Khairil Anuar Ismail said in a statement.

 

He was responding to an allegation by one Asiah Abd Jalil on Facebook who claimed his brother and another man was beaten up at Dataran Merdeka after the rally by Unit Amal at 1am.

 

"My brother was badly beaten up, his face was badly bruised and another man was thrown into the drain. They were attacked by tens of PAS' Unit Amal members with wood and helmet, kicked and punched.

 

"Friends from DAP and anti-Lynas were forced to call the police and when police arrived, an idiot by the name of Anuar and more than 10 of his friends arrogantly showed their Unit Amal cards," Asiah had said in a Facebook posting.

 

However, Khairil denied there were any Unit Amal members by the name of Anuar from Pandan as alleged.

 

"Also no Unit Amal card has been issued in the last eight years and the number of cards issued before that were also limited," he said.

 

'Unit Amal will not condone beatings'

 

Khairil said it did not make sense for any Unit Amal member to flash their membership cards at the cops and urged those making the allegation to present evidence to PAS and the authorities.

 

"We will never condone any such action," he said.

 

Khairil also addressed the brief scuffle involving Unit Amal during the rally at Dataran Merdeka.

 

"The incident happened because a small group of participants attempted to enter the field at Dataran and interrupted the rally by being noisy," he said.

 

He added that a rally condition set by police was that the field, where construction work was taking place, was off limits.

 

"They were never assaulted but we only attempted to disperse them and also calm another group who wanted to react against the abuses that were being hurled at us, thus a tense situation was created," he said.

 

He added that any injury that may have occurred in the incident were accidental which could have happened during the pushing.
