A man suspected to be a member of a Somalia-based terrorist network was arrested outside the Malaysian capital, police said Friday.

The 34-year-old Somali suspect was arrested late Thursday in Selangor after weeks of surveillance, according to deputy police chief Bakri Zinin.

"He was previously charged with being involved in terror activities in East Africa and was listed in Interpol's Red Notice," Bakri was quoted by the Star Online newspaper as saying.

A red notice means a suspect is targeted for arrest and extradition.

The man was suspected to be a member of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group, Bakri said.

"We are investigating his activities in Malaysia to uncover Al-Shabaab's network whose members might be hiding or planning action that can threaten the country's safety," Bakri said.

A police source said investigators were trying to determine if the Somali suspect has link with the 10 Malaysians arrested last month during a police anti-terror operations in several Malaysian states.

"We are also conducting follow-up operations for other suspected Somali members of Al-Shabaab who might be staying in the country," he said.
