Right-wing group Majlis Jalinan Muafakat Malaysia (MJMM) has lodged a police report against DAP's Tanjung Bungah state assemblyperson Teh Yee Che for championing transgenders' rights.

Teh ( righ t) had proposed the creation of a Transgender Institute similar to that in India and Indonesia.

MJMM chief Rani Kulup Abdullah said the proposal, which he called a "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) committee", would destroy the country's harmony.

He added that DAP should not be supporting "immoral" activities and backing groups that practice "free sex".

"We see it is as if the political party is giving their blessing for such things," he told KiniTV after lodging a police report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this afternoon.

Motion withdrawn

Teh had planned to table a motion in the Penang state assembly to request RM200,000 to fund a Transgender Institute.

However, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday announced that the motion had been withdrawn after Teh was urged to do so by his party colleagues.

A disappointed Teh told Malaysiakini today that the motion was a "test" of the state government's commitment to transgenders' rights.

He added that groups that were accusing him of advocating for the LGBT community was "confused".

"They (critics) were talking about sexual rights between persons of same sex but I am talking about gender identity and gender rights, about discrimination against a minority group and how we can address these issues," he said.

Teh's political secretary, Hezreen Hazreen Shaik Daud ( above ), is a transgender.
