MIC and PAS Youth have condemned the attack on two elderly nuns in Seremban and expressed concern about the incident having a racial or religious twist.

MIC president G Palanivel advised the public not to overreact and refrain from turning the incident into a racial issue.

PAS Youth secretary Mohd Nasaie Ismail, however, was concerned if the attack had racial or religious motives.

Their concern is justified given that the attack on Sister Juliana Lim, 69 and Sister Marie Rose alias Theresa Teng, 79, comes amid heightened racial and religious tension in Malaysia.

"The police have classified the case as robbery and are still investigating.

"We will leave it to their good hands to handle the issue as best as possible," Palanivel said in a statement today.

As for the attack, the MIC president described it as a "heinous act carried out by cowards" and expressed hope that the perpetrators would be nabbed soon.

"The nuns are two old ladies and to beat them until one of them goes into coma is an inhuman act," he said, adding that he would pray for their recovery.

Goes against all religions

Meanwhile, Mohd Nasaie called it a cruel and inhuman act, which went against the teachings of all religions.

"Malaysians cannot accept such things. Such violence is not our culture," he said.

The PAS Youth leader also reminded all quarters on the importance of security, urging that churches be monitored and its staff be provided adequate security.

"The police must carry out a thorough probe to discover the cause and the person responsible for this crime.

"PAS Youth also hopes that the two nuns would recover from their injuries," he added.

The nuns  were attacked with a helmet and robbed by a man just before dawn outside the Church of the Visitation in on Wednesday.

 

They were found unconscious at the main entrance of the church. The duo had just arrived at the church from home and were about to enter it when they were set upon.

The attack even prompted Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to denounce it as a senseless and appalling act.
