The rapid development of Miri City since its elevation to a city status in 2005 may replace Kuching City as the new state capital for Sarawak.

Chief Minister Adenan Satem said in view of the many development projects being implemented in Miri City now, it would not be a surprise if Miri City could overtake the popularity of Kuching City in future.

"Miri City is fast catching up with Kuching City and Sibu town," he said at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Miri Central Park project today.

Miri was elevated to a city status on May 20, 2005 and created history by being the first non-capital city in the country to be accorded such status.    

On the park project, Adenan welcomed the private and state government initiatives that would transform Miri City to be more vibrant than before.

    

Dubbed as the first authentic seafront development in the state, the Miri Central Park covered a total of 15.7 acres or 6.28 hectares of land and was expected to be ready in early 2016.

 

The park is jointly implemented by Pantai Bayu Indah, a member of the Samling group and Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA), a state-owned statutory body.
