Actress Hanez Suraya and her boyfriend yesterday filed a suit against Malaysian Airlines System Bhd (MAS) alleging the airline was responsible for the leak on their air tickets to Bangkok in the social media last month.

Hanez Suraya, whose full name is Hanez Suraya Abdul Aziz, 29, her boyfriend Romie Razin Adilha Abd Jais, 34, filed the suit via the judiciary’s e-filing system at the High Court in Shah Alam through the law firm of Messrs Harjit Sandhu.

In her statement of claim, the actress, who acted in the drama series ‘Love You Mr Arrogant’, said last April 20, she and Romie had taken MAS Flight MH0788 to Bangkok and had left via gate G8 at the KL Internatonal Airport in Sepang.

She said before they boarded the aircraft, they had handed over their flight tickets to three MAS staff members manning the gate.

She added that several hours after their arrival in Bangkok, they were informed by friends that copies of the stumps of their flight ticket were uploaded on a Facebook account known as ‘Kami Sokong Liyana Manan’ (We support Liyana Manan).

On checking the account, she said they found more than 1,000 disparaging comments about them.

The plaintiffs claimed that MAS and/or its staff members had acted unethically and violated the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

They further claimed that on April 21, through their lawyers they had written to MAS seeking clarification and redress, and following that, met with three MAS officers by the names of Puan Masitoh, Encik Muhammad Fauzi Mahayuddin and Encik Nor Azuan Ismail who informed them that the defendants needed some time to investigate the matter.  

On April 29 they were asked by MAS to furnish copies of the flight tickets which they did the next day, the plaintiffs said.

On May 8, the plaintiffs said they again wrote to MAS through their lawyers giving the company till May 12 for a response but to date there has been none.

The duo claimed the spread of the story on social media, blogs and newspapers had caused them severe emotional stress and wanted the court to order the airline to pay them appropriate damages.

Hanez Suraya when met at the court said the suit was filed because the issue had affected her daily movements.

“This is a question of privacy and my safety,” said Hanez Suraya, who was accompanied by lawyers Harjit Sandhu and Han Nurliyana Abdul Rahman.

Harjit said the summons would be served on MAS at the latest by today.
