Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has been elected president of the Football Association of Malaysia for the 2014/18 term. 

According to Bernama , the Pahang prince takes over from his father Sultan Ahmad Shah and was elected at the 50th FAM Congress in Shah Alam today.

Tengku Abdullah polled 27 out of 39 votes against Johor crown prince and Johor Football Association president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.

Tengku Abdullah was deputy president in the last term, and was widely-anticipated to succeed his father who held the post for three decades.

The Johor prince had earlier criticised this by saying that it was like a baton pass within the Pahang palace.

The office-bearers were elected by 39 delegates - the 14 states football associations (FAs) will cast two votes each (28 votes), together with Armed Forces (2), Police (2), the Malaysian Malays FA (2), the Malaysian Chinese FA (2), the Malaysian Indian Sports Council (2) and the Malaysian Coaches Association (1).

Sultan Ahmad had earlier today announced his withdrawal from the presidency race to make way for fresh blood.
